A recent study shows that drinking fruit or vegetable juice every day can keep Alzheimer's away. Researchers found that people who drank fruit and vegetable juices more than three times a week were 76% less likely to develop dementia than those who drank it up to once a week. In addition, drinking fruit and vegetable juices once or twice a week can reduce the risk of dementia by 16%, according to a study published in the American Journal of Medicine.
American researchers followed 2,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans living in Japan for 10 years, all of whom were over 65 years old. At the start of the study, the men all had varying degrees of signs of Alzheimer's disease. Researchers obtained information about their daily diet from 1,589 experimental participants with an average age of 72 to study the relationship between diet and dementia.
The results show that people living in Japan are less likely to suffer from Alzheimer's disease. There are relatively more Japanese people living in the United States suffering from dementia. This is because people living in Japan have a relatively light diet, and their daily drinks are mainly fruit juices and vegetable juices.
Researchers say that polyphenols, an antioxidant contained in fruit and vegetable juices, can protect the human brain and help people resist Alzheimer's disease. Polyphenols are mainly found in the skins of fruits and vegetables, and are also abundant in juices, teas and wines. The study also showed that for those who already carry the gene for dementia, the fruit can enhance brain protection.
