What qualifications do mental health teachers need?

At present, there is no exclusive mental health teacher qualification certificate in China that is independent of the teacher qualification certificate system. The basic threshold for enrollment in public primary and secondary schools is the mental health education teacher qualification certificate for the corresponding school period. For non-registration positions and university psychology positions, professional qualifications related to psychological counseling will be superimposed according to the needs of the unit.

Last year, I helped the district education bureau review the application materials for the autumn recruitment of psychology teachers. Six of the 17 applicants had mismatches in teaching qualifications. There was a girl who had a bachelor's and master's degree in applied psychology. She got junior high school Chinese teaching qualifications and a stack of psychology training certificates. She still couldn't pass the preliminary review. After all, most public schools now require that the teaching qualifications and the applied positions should be completely matched. It was really stuck.

However, not all cases are so strict. I know an old teacher who has been working in a provincial key psychological work for 12 years. When she transferred from a moral education position, the mental health education teaching materials had not been included in the national unified examination. She only had the second-level psychological counselor certificate taken in 2015, and supervision records of hundreds of cases. The school adopted the channel to introduce special talents. Now the psychological activity class she leads has won the provincial first prize, and she is the leader of the psychology subject in the entire district.

The requirements vary quite a bit in different scenarios. If you are applying for a position in a psychological counseling center in a university, many do not require mental health teaching qualifications. Instead, they will consider registered psychologists and registered supervisor qualifications from the registration system of the Chinese Psychological Society, or psychotherapist qualification certificates from the health system. After all, the cases in universities are more complex, and the requirements for clinical consultation skills are often higher than daily teaching skills.

There have been related discussions in the industry. Some people think that the threshold for applying for mental health teaching qualifications is a bit rigid. After all, many psychology students prioritize attending labs, saving consulting hours, and taking many professional-related qualifications during school. Instead, they forget to prepare for the teaching qualification exam, and they directly miss the opportunity when they apply for jobs.； Some people think that there must be a threshold for teaching qualifications. After all, psychology teachers are teachers first, and they must understand the laws of education and master basic teaching methods. Otherwise, no matter how good the individual cases are, they will not be able to provide universal psychology classes to all students in the school, and they will not be able to cooperate with the school in completing daily psychological screenings and theme activities.

Oh, by the way, I also want to remind you that many psychological counselor training certificates on the market now claim to be "you can become a psychological teacher after taking the exam". They are essentially training certificates, not nationally recognized professional qualifications.

In fact, to put it bluntly, various qualification certificates are like tickets to the door. If you really want to gain a foothold in your position, you still have to rely on years of case accumulation, regular supervision and study, and the patience to be willing to squat down and listen to students talk about "useless little things" for a long time. These invisible things are much more valuable than a few pages of certificates with official seals.
