In fact, there is no fixed process for skin care that is universal across the Internet. There are only three core steps that must be done: cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection. The remaining steps are all optional, so there is no need to make up the number of steps.

When many people first came into contact with skin care, they were always stuck with the entire process, including seven or eight layers of toners, serums, essences, lotions, face creams, eye creams, and neck care. In the end, they ended up with a face full of closed-mouth acne, and they didn’t know why. A while ago, I helped my cousin with oily skin tidy up her dressing table. In the summer of over 30 degrees, she was still stacking two layers of essence and sealing cream. Her T-zone was so oily that she could fry an egg, and she also had several red and swollen pimples on her nose. I asked her to change her routine at night to amino acid cleansing + niacinamide essence + refreshing gel. During the day, she directly cleansed her face and patted it with water before applying sunscreen. Within half a month, she took photos and told me that her face was no longer oily and her acne was almost gone.

Nowadays, many people on the Internet are arguing about whether skin care should be as simple as possible, or whether it is more effective if you have comprehensive steps. In fact, both sides of the statement have applicable scenarios, and there is no absolute right or wrong at all: people with sensitive skin and thin barrier, the more functional products they add, the easier it will be. Adding burden to the skin and conscientiously doing three-step basic skin care can gradually strengthen the barrier; if your skin condition is stable and you have clear anti-aging and whitening needs, it is of course no problem to add products with corresponding effects between the three basic steps. There is no need to stand on one side.

To put it bluntly, it is just like what you usually wear when going out. Bottoming, pants, and jackets are the standard outfit for going out, which correspond to the three core steps of skin care. If you are cold, add an extra sweater. If you want to look good, add a necklace and accessories. It corresponds to additional steps such as functional essence, facial mask, and exfoliation. You don’t have to look at what others are using and just put it on your face. The most important thing is to be comfortable and suitable for your current skin condition.

By the way, you can adjust it flexibly if you encounter special situations. For example, I went to the beach some time ago and my face was red. After I came back, I temporarily added a soothing and repairing mask after cleansing. I applied it for three days to keep it stable. Normally, I don’t apply a mask every day. After all, applying too much can easily over-hydrate and damage the skin. The same applies to steps such as exfoliation and acid brushing. For oily skin that tolerates it, doing it once a week can reduce oiliness and dullness. For dry skin, once every half a month is too much. For sensitive skin, it is best not to touch it at all. Just adjust according to your own skin feedback.
