Yellowing of leucorrhea after vaginal delivery may be a manifestation of inflammation or may be related to physiological factors. Common causes include postpartum lochia, bacterial vaginosis, trichomonas vaginitis, cervicitis or changes in hormone levels. It is recommended to seek medical treatment promptly for a clear diagnosis.
1. Postpartum lochia residue
Leucorrhea mixed with a small amount of yellow secretions within 2-4 weeks after vaginal delivery is mostly due to incomplete discharge of lochia, which is a normal physiological phenomenon. At this time, the secretion may appear light yellow or tan, with no obvious odor. You can wash the perineum with warm water and change sanitary napkins frequently. If it lasts for more than 6 weeks, you need to eliminate the remaining uterine cavity.
2. Bacterial vaginosis
Decreased resistance after childbirth may cause bacterial vaginosis, which manifests as yellow or gray-white discharge with a fishy smell and mild itching of the vulva. It may be related to factors such as vaginal flora disorder and frequent douching. A doctor needs to confirm the diagnosis through secretion testing. Commonly used drugs include metronidazole vaginal suppository, clindamycin ointment, etc.
3. Trichomonal vaginitis
Caused by Trichomonas vaginalis infection, the typical symptoms are foamy yellow-green discharge, accompanied by obvious odor and burning sensation. It can be spread through sexual contact or poorly sterilized hygiene products. After diagnosis, the couple needs to be treated together, and tinidazole tablets combined with metronidazole vaginal effervescent tablets are commonly used.
4. Cervicitis
Cervical injury during childbirth may lead to secondary infection, resulting in an increase in purulent yellow leucorrhea and occasional contact bleeding. It needs to be identified through gynecological examination and cervical TCT screening. In the acute stage, Baofukang suppository, anti-metritis tablets and other drugs can be used as directed by the doctor. Chronic inflammation may require laser treatment.
5. Fluctuations in hormone levels
Low estrogen levels during lactation may cause the vaginal mucosa to become thinner, reduce secretions, and oxidize and turn yellow after accumulation. There is usually no other discomfort in this condition. Just keep the vulva clean and dry. It will improve on its own as menstruation resumes.
Postpartum women should choose cotton breathable underwear, wash the vulva with warm water 1-2 times a day, and avoid using alkaline lotions. Add probiotic-rich foods such as yogurt and soy products to your diet to reduce spicy stimulation. If the yellow discharge lasts for more than 2 weeks and is accompanied by odor, itching or abdominal pain, you need to go to the gynecology department as soon as possible for routine leucorrhea, B-ultrasound and other examinations to rule out serious conditions such as pelvic infection. Medication during lactation must be strictly followed by the doctor's instructions, and you are not allowed to purchase medication on your own.
