Prostatitis in men can be improved by adjusting living habits, physical therapy, using drugs as prescribed by the doctor, Chinese medicine conditioning, and surgical treatment. Prostatitis may be related to bacterial infection, long-term sitting, low immunity, urinary reflux, psychological stress and other factors.

    1. Adjust living habits

Avoid sitting for long periods of time and get up and move around for 5-10 minutes every hour to reduce pressure on the prostate. Drink 1500-2000 ml of warm water every day to dilute the urine concentration. Regular sexual life and moderate ejaculation 1-2 times a week can help drain prostate fluid. Avoid eating spicy foods such as chili pepper and alcohol to reduce prostate congestion. Foods rich in zinc such as pumpkin seeds and tomatoes can be consumed in moderation.

    2. Physical therapy

Warm water sitz bath can promote local blood circulation. The water temperature should be controlled at about 40℃ for 15-20 minutes each time. Transrectal prostate massage needs to be performed by a professional physician to help drain accumulated prostate fluid. Low-frequency pulse electrical stimulation can improve the function of pelvic floor muscles and relieve pain symptoms. Microwave hyperthermia reduces the inflammatory response through physical warming, and generally requires 10-15 courses of treatment.

    3. Use medications as directed by your doctor

Antibiotics such as levofloxacin tablets and azithromycin dispersible tablets can be used for bacterial prostatitis. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as celecoxib capsules can relieve pain and swelling. Tamsulosin hydrochloride sustained-release capsules can relax prostate smooth muscle and improve dysuria. Lorazepam tablets can be used short-term when accompanied by anxiety symptoms. Botanical preparations such as Perxta tablets contain pollen extract, which has anti-inflammatory effects.

    4. Traditional Chinese Medicine Conditioning

For the damp-heat type, Bazheng Powder can be used, which contains plantain seeds, Qumai and other dampness-reducing herbs. For patients with qi stagnation and blood stasis, Shaofu Zhuyu Decoction is suitable, which contains ingredients such as Angelica sinensis and Chuanxiong rhizome to promote blood circulation. Acupuncture is performed on acupuncture points such as Guanyuan and Zhongji three times a week to improve local circulation. Moxibustion at Sanyinjiao point can warm and unblock the meridians, for 15-20 minutes each time. Traditional Chinese medicine sitz bath can be decoctioned with heat-clearing and detoxifying medicinal materials such as Phellodendron cypress and Sophora flavescens.

    5. Surgical treatment

Transurethral resection of the prostate is suitable for patients with prostatic hyperplasia. Prostatic puncture and drainage is performed in cases of prostate abscess formation. Bladder neck incision can relieve severe urinary obstruction. A urinary catheter needs to be left in place for 3-5 days after surgery to keep the perineum clean. All surgical options must be evaluated by a urologist before implementation.

Patients with prostatitis should avoid exercise that puts pressure on the perineum, such as cycling, and choose gentle exercise such as swimming or brisk walking. Wear loose-fitting cotton underwear to keep the perineum dry and clean. Establish a regular schedule and ensure 7-8 hours of sleep. Learn stress management techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, etc. Pay attention to keeping your waist and abdomen warm in winter, and review your prostate fluid routine regularly. If aggravated symptoms such as fever and hematuria occur, follow-up visits should be made in time.
